MAU Fails to Prepare for Final Swimming Championship

Malawi Aquatic Union’s (MAU) preparations for 2019 Fina World Championship which has started on 17 and is expected to end on 29 July in Gwangju, South Korea has been affected by cold weather conditions in the country.

Coach Yona Walesi confirmed of the failure for the swimmers to do practices due to lack of heated pools in the country.

“We are experiencing unconducive environment for preparation. The water is too cold for us to go in and do practices.

But Mau can brief a sigh of relief since, despite Tayamika Chang’anamuno’s failure to practice, three other swimmers, the likes of Amara Pinto who is in Thailand, Michael Swift in the United States and Filipe Gome in Portugal are doing there preparations using state-of the-art facilities outside where they are on various scholarships.

Mau is also expected to send two athletes, Jessica Makwenda and Murray McPherson to the Fina World Junior Championships in Budapest, Hungary from 18 to 26 August with Brave Lifa as their coach.

On 11-15 Septmber 2019, Malawi Aquatic Union will again send athletes to participate in CANA Junior Africa Swimming Championship to take place in Tunisia.

CEC are the 2019 PSI Champions

Polytechnic Continuing Education Centre (CEC) are the 2019 National Presidential Darts Champions following their win at Kamuzu Barracks where the deciding matches took place on Sunday, 14 July.

Poly won with 16 points, and Moth Club who were the defending champions came as runners-up with 14 points.

In Ladies category, Lilongwe Ladies are the 2019 Champions and Blantyre Ladies came as runners-up.

Chifuniro Chagotha is the champion for Girls Youth Category while Fales Ajida finished on second position during the 2019 Darts championship competition.

In the Under-13 Boys Category, Moses Chikwatu is the 2019 Darts champion and Konwel Kamanga came second. Anastazia Botha is the champion for Under-18 Girls category while Vitumbiko Khaula came second.

In Boys Youth Category, Kondwani Botha is the champion followed Anock Mkhodia who came second in the competition.

The 6th Japanese Ambassador Judo Championship has seen females as the most improved Judo athletes following the event that took place on Saturday, 13 July 2019 at Bingu National Stadium, in Lilongwe.

The most improved female athlete is Francine Lotanga, the best female athlete is Harriet Bonface while the best young athlete is Alex Omeyambe.

The 6th Japanese Ambassador’s Judo Championship had 27 athletes who competed in the event and they came from KIS, BT and Dzaleka clubs.

The government, through Malawi National Council of Sports fulfilled its promise having released k91 million to cater for queens’ travelling costs to Liverpool, England for 2019 world netball cup slated for 12-21 July 2019.

The queens left the country for England earlier in order to have stop-over to prepare for the 2019 world netball cup In Wales where they would play three International test series slated for 4-10 July against Trinidad & Tobago who were the hosts, and Grenada.

The netball governing body’ general secretary Carlo Bapu confirmed in an interview that the release of k k91 million (k113 million in total) funds means they are ready to compete in 2019 world netball cup.

“We have been given the full financial kit and we are grateful”, she said.
Commenting on delay to release the funds, the Acting executive secretary for Malawi National Council of Sports, Henery Mereka said NAM exhausted its annual budget.

“You need to bear in mind that NAM exhausted its resources so we had to sit down and look for additional funding which goes through some procedures”, said Mereka.
Queens coach, Griffin Saenda applauded the government for the fund saying this will motivate players.

“ The availability of finance resources in the camp will motivate players” he said.
Malawi, one of six countries that qualified for Netball world cup is in group B alongside New Zealand, Barbados and Singapore.

Queens finished on position five in the last Netball World Cup.

Flames in Quarter Finals Come Next Cosafa

Following this years’ incredible performance by Malawi national team, Flames in just ended cosafa cup, the team will see itself starting from quarter-final stages come 2020 cosafa cup season.

According to the general secretary for the Council for Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa), Suzgo Nyirenda confirmed the development saying Flames would start playing from the quarter-finals if rules remain unchanged.

“There is a proposal awaiting to be tabled to change the format. But as it stands, any team that finish in the top six such as Malawi is seeded”, he said.

Malawi finished on position six in the Cosafa Cup out of 14 teams after losing to South Africa 5-4 on post-match penalties.

Flames qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015 after emerging the best team from group B , defeating Seychelles 3-0 ,Namibia 2-1 and drew 1-1 against Mozambique side. It then lost 4-2 to Zambia on post-match penalties, following a 2-2 draw.
