SCORCHES DEPART FOR SOUTH AFRICA

The Malawi women national football team, the Scorchers, have left the country this morning through Chileka airport for South Africa where they will compete in the 2023 COSAFA cup women championship which is scheduled to take place from 4-15 October.

The Scorches are in group A and will battle it out with South Africa, Eswatini and Madagascar to book a place in the knockout stage.

The Scorches will start their campaign against the host South Africa on Wednesday 4 October at Lucas Moripe stadium from 3:00 pm before battling it out with Eswatini on Saturday 7 October at Dobsonville stadium from 3:30pm and their last group match will be against Madagascar on Tuesday 10 October at Soweto campus from 3:30pm.

This year tournament will commence with the group stage comprising three groups each consisting of four teams. Group winners, along with the highest ranked second place team will advance to the semi-finals of the competition.

Before departure the Scorches played two friendly matches against Seychelles and managed to win 34-0 on aggregate.

During last year’s championship the Scorchers exited the tournament in the group stage while in 2021 the Scorches finished as runners-up after losing in the final 1-0 against Tanzania.

This will be the eleventh edition of the COSAFA women championship.

The Malawi National Council of Sports is wishing the Scorches all the best as they represent Malawi at the regional level.
