FLAMES THROUGH TO ROUND OF SIXTEEN

History has been made at the 2021 TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations in Cameroon as the Malawi national football team, the Flames has progressed to the knockout stage of the competition through the best third-placed finish ticket.

The team which was anxiously waiting to know its fate after putting up impressive performances in the group stages in which they won against Zimbabwe drew with Senegal and lost to Guinea, got the news that they have progressed to the knock out stage yesterday after Nigeria defeated Guinea Bissau 2-0.

This is the first time in football history for the Flames to reach the knockout stage at Africa’s biggest competition since Malawi made its debut appearance in 1984 and again qualified in 2010 where they excited the tournament in the group stages.

This now means that the Flames will face the Atlas Lions of Morocco on Tuesday 25 January 2022 in Yaonde at Stade Omnisport Ahmadou  Ahidjo stadium from 21:00 hours Central African Time.

The development also means that Malawi is the only team from the COSAFA region to progress to the knockout stage of this year’s tournament, while Comoros who beat Ghana 3-2 will know if they will make it to the next round according to today games results, where Ivory Coast play Algeria and Equatorial Guinea play against Sierra Leone.
