305 ATHLETES IN CAMP FOR REGION 5

305 athletes are in camp in Lilongwe in preparation for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Under 20 youth games which will take place from 2nd to 11th December 2022 in the capital city.

This is the second camping for Team Malawi, after the first selective camping which took place earlier in June in Blantyre. The athletes entered camp on 18 September 2022 and are expected to finish on 2 October 2022.

Previously the first camp, which was selective camping identified 293 athletes out of 400. This time around the number has increased as girls under 17 Football has also been included. Apart from the girls under 17 football, E-sport has also been identified as one of the sporting codes which will be added to the games and Malawi will feature a team.

10 sporting codes namely Football, Volleyball, Netball, Basketball, Athletics, Para Olympics, Lawn Tennis, Judo, Taekwondo and Boxing are the ones that are in camp, while swimming and E-sport will conduct their camping later on.

The athletes are camping at Lilongwe girl’s secondary school. After the two weeks camping the athletes will be engaged in residential camping where they will be monitored by their coaches, Malawi School Sports Association and Sports Council. The final camping will take place in November which will also lead the team to the games.

During the region 5 games in Lesotho last year Team Malawi managed to acquire 29 medals which include 2 gold, 10 Silver and 17 bronze.
