Sep 27, 2023 | News

30 participants completed a 4-day netball coaching and umpiring course in Likoma district which was organized by the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) northern region office with the aim of improving netball coaching and umpiring in the district.

This was the first ever netball coaching and umpiring course to take place in the district. The Course started on Saturday 19 September and finished on Wednesday 22 September, 2023 and was taking place at the District Commissioner netball court.

17 male sports teachers and 13 female sports teachers from primary and secondary schools took part in the course which was facilitated by the interim coach of Malawi national netball team Samuel Kanyenda and netball tutor Ken Mphande.

Making his remarks after the 4-day coaching and umpiring course MNCS Sports and Recreation Development officer for the North Grecian Mkandawire urged the participants to practice what they learnt during the course

‘’ This is the first time to conduct netball coaching and umpiring course here in Likoma, we decided to have the course in Likoma because we observed that teams from Likoma and Chizumuru were facing challenges when it comes to coaching and umpiring. We believe that poor coaching and umpiring greatly affect the identification of talent as well as the development of players. Likoma has potential to produce netball stars and it is our wish that this course will contribute positively to the development of netball in Likoma,’’ explained Mkandawire
