MALAWI NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SPORTS INTRODUCE MZUZU CITY HALF MARATHON

The Malawi National Council of Sports has introduced the Mzuzu city half marathon which will take place on 5 March 2023 under the theme ‘’in pursuit of greatness’’

Making the announced today during a press briefing at Grand palace hotel in Mzuzu Board member and Chairperson of the Sports Development Committee of MNCS Mrs. Helen Tasosa explained that the half marathon has been introduced with the aim of creating a platform for athletes to have many opportunities to compete, develop and improve for better performances.

‘’ As Malawi National Council of Sports we feel that now is the right time to bring the marathon to Mzuzu, this will be a 21-kilometer marathon and we have decided to announce today so that athletes should start preparing’’

‘’ As council we believe that the marathon will help to raise awareness of good health and wellbeing, to encourage mass participation in sport as well as to promote the city of Mzuzu and at the same time the half marathon will acts as preparatory stage for the Blantyre 42.195-kilometer race. Explained Tasosa

The Mzuzu city half marathon will see winners walking away with K1 million kwacha in both male and female categories while the runner up with receive K700,000 and K500,000 for third position.

This is the second marathon that Council is managing and will cost MNCS 30 million kwacha.

Making his remarks during the press briefing the Acting Executive Secretary of Malawi National Council of Sports Shephord Boma explained that athletics as one of the individual sport need to be supported and encouraged.

‘’Through athletics we can get more medals at international level, but that can only be achieved if we promote individual sport, so as Sports Council we thought it wise to give the people of Mzuzu something special by introducing the Mzuzu city half marathon’’. Explained Boma.

In his remarks chairperson of the Main Organizing Committee Peter Mumba thanked Sports Council for introducing the marathon.

‘’As Mzuzu we are very prepared and ready to host our first marathon, from now on until the day of the marathon we will be making preparations’’ explained Mumba

The Mzuzu city half marathon is open to both local and international athletes and athletes of all ages are encouraged to participate. Registration for the marathon is K20,000 and payment can be made through Council head office in Blantyre, Lilongwe office at Kamuzu Institute for Sport and in Mzuzu at OPC building at our offices or through National Bank of Malawi Account number: 1802283 Victoria Avenue.
