The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) officially handed over the K5 million donation to Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) today in Blantyre.

Making his remarks after the donation MNCS Board Chairperson Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise explained that the donation is not going to DODMA but to Malawians.

‘’As MNCS we felt the need to come and make a donation to DODMA. The donation is not going to DODMA, the donation is to the people of Malawi, our fellow citizens. As MNCS we realize that sports cannot be without spectators, now that the spectators need our support, we felt that it’s obligatory on our part to help them. So, we looked around for some resources and we have made a contribution of K5 million. It is not a lot of money, but that’s what we could afford at the current period. What we are hopping is that our associations and different stakeholders can also contribute.’’ Explained Dr. Madise.

Dr. Madise further emphasized that sports it’s not about our sports women and men.

‘’there are also supporters, so the supporters are coming from the areas where Cyclone Freddy has hit, talk of Chilombwe, Manja, Naotcha, Ndilande and some other places, even Mulanje it’s the same. So as Council we are an arm of government, so we felt it necessary to help. So, what ever little we had, we have to support. This is also a lesson to our affiliates and any stakeholder to support with anything they can.’’ Explained Madise.

On his part the Director Responsible for Recovery and Resilience Peter Chimangeni expressed gratitude for the efforts made by Sports Council.

‘’ You have heard from the reports that almost 490,000 people have been affected and displaced. These people are seeking shelter in different camps, churches, and schools. These people desperately requiring food, assistance and any other support, so this donation will go a long way to help those people in the communities. ‘Explained Chimangeni.

At least 200 deaths have been reported by DODMA and thousands have been left homeless.
