FLAMES REACH COSAFA CUP SEMI-FINALS

Jul 11, 2023 | News

The Malawi national football team has made it into the semi-finals of the 2023 Hollywoodbet COSAFA cup following an impressive 2-0 win over Comoros at Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban, South Africa.

The Flames went into the match needing only a draw to qualify for the semi-finals and produced an excellent performance to stun Comoros to register three wins out of three games at the tournament.

Chawanangwa Kaonga opened the scoring in the 30th minute following a foul by a Comoros defender on winger Patrick Mwaungulu which led to a penalty which Kaonga calmly converted. Mwaungulu registered his name on the score sheet in the 35th minute when he pounced on ball that came off the upright following a lovely long-range strike from Kaonga.

The victory means the Flames finish top of group B with 9 points, Zambia who beat Seychelles 4-2 finish on second position with 6 points while Comoros finish third with 3 points and Seychelles anchor the group on fourth position with no point having lost all their three games.

The Flames will next battle it out with Lesotho the Crocodiles in the semi-final of the 2023 COSAFA cup on Friday 15th July to decide who makes it into the final.

This is the first time for the Flames in 20 years to reach the semi-final of the COSAFA cup. The last time the Flames reached the semi-final of the COSAFA cup was in 2003
