END OF THE ROAD

Jun 20, 2023 | News

The Malawi football national team has failed to qualify for the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa cup finals following a goal-less draw against Ethiopia on Tuesday afternoon at Zimpeto stadium in Mozambique.

The Flames went into the match looking for a win to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2023 AFCON cup finals in Ivory Coast alive, but they could not find the back of the net despite creating most chances and having many shots on goal.

The result means that Egypt and Guinea finish on first and second position with 12 and 9 points respectively and qualify for the continental show piece, while Ethiopia is on third position with 4 points and Malawi anchor group D with 4 points.

Flames coach Patrick Mabedi expressed disappointment with the result and explained that his troupes sat back a lot and did not take the game to the opponent.

‘’ This was an easy game but we made life difficult for ourselves. The game is over, we have now to look at the future and continue with the project we have started of rebuilding the team’’, explained Mabedi.

The Flames have one assignment left against Guinea to finish the 2023 AFCON qualifying campaign in September at the Bingu National stadium while Egypt will host Ethiopia in Cairo.
