The Athletics care-taker committee has assured all Malawians and the athletics family that all is set for the Athletics Association of Malawi Elective General Assembly which will take place at sunbird Livingstonia hotel in Salima on Saturday 30th April, 2023.
The sentiments were made by His Lordship Justice Sylvester Kalembera JA, SC, during a press briefing in Blantyre.
‘’As far as we are concerned, we are ready for the elections on Saturday in Salima at Sunbird Livingstonia Hotel where the Main Executive Committee will be elected and these elections are going to take place. We have heard whatever is being said about World Athletics, but in our view, if at all it is true what is being said about World Athletics, then definitely they are acting on wrong information’’
‘’What we believe is that World Athletics must not be used as threat to a process which we have undertaken, what we do not understand ourselves is that from the beginning when we had a meeting with the dissolved AAM and resolved to go ahead and adopt the new constitution they never talked about World Athletics. We have gone through the whole process of elections they never talked about world athletics, so we would like to assure all Malawians that the elections are happening on Saturday 30th April, 2023.’’ Explained Kalembera
During the press briefing Justice Kalembera JA, SC also explained that some candidates who were nominated to compete at the National Elective General Assembly in different positions have withdrawn due to different reasons.
‘’One candidate has withdrawn yesterday citing that there was purported communication from World Athletics, another has withdrawn as he is outside the country while others have withdrawn as they want to give chance to others.’’ Explained Justice Kalembera JA, SC.
The care taker committee started with regional elections in the south on 11 March, 2023 before conducting regional elections in the center on 18 March, 2023 and conclude regional elections in the north on 25 March, 2023. National Committee Elections were held on 1 April, 2023 in Lilongwe. The Malawi Electoral Commission have been tasked to conduct the elections.
