Aug 30, 2019 | Draughts

Draughts national team has left the country yesterday for Bulgaria where it is expected to compete in 2019 World Draughts Championship slated for 1- 10 September.

General Secretary for Association of Draughts in Malawi, Suzgo Nkhoma, said they are hopeful of becoming the first African team to reach the top five at the world championship.

“Previously, African team has made it in the top 30. As for us, we will rely on Moses Winesi and Enock Banda who are international Masters while Juma Madalitso is Federation Master. We will also go with a local champion, Humble Bondo”, said Nkhoma.

Nkhoma concluded that in 2015,Malawi emerged the African team at the world level and in 2016 scooped first position in Africa. And again in 2017, Malawi came on 31st position at the world ranking.

Winesi confirmed that they are well prepared to face any pressure at the competition.

“We have been learning new strategies from an American-based Grand Master. Our level of performance will not be the same and we have gained skill on how to approach an international competition”, he said.
