Malawi Chess in Top Ten in Africa

Malawi national chess team has gone up with four steps in Africa as continent following their new position of number ten out of 20 teams in the just ended All African Games in Rabat, Morocco.

Leonard Sharra, general secretary of Chess Association of Malawi said the results has given them hope that they can do better than this come next encounter in the same event.

“Malawi scooped position seven following two wins against Eritrea and Namibia but drawn back after drawing against an all Grandmaster Egyptian side on board one in the final round who progressed to the top position after 4-0 victory over Malawi. Our team has improved. We have been on position 14 in Africa, now that we have managed move to top ten is no mean achievement”, he said.

Fide Master Gerald Mphungu and joseph Mwale were some of the players who represented the country at the event.
