The Cycling Federations of Malawi(CFM) has reminded all the participants for 2019 Presidential Initiative on Sport (PIS) race to observe time set by world cycling governing body Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) as way of preparing the athletes for Olympic games which has never been achieved by any of Malawian athlete.

Jonathan Tengani, vice-president for CFM said athletes should expect to work on rules of the game in a stretch of 140-kilometre within three hours and 35 minutes as standard time come 4 August 2019 in Lilongwe.

We are strongminded to produce a qualified athlete for the Olympics and we believe it is only through such restrictions that we can push our athletes to meet the standard. As usual, the winner will receive k 100,000 and k 80,000 grand prize money in men and women categories respectively only if the athlete finishes within the set time limit, failing which will receive minus k 30,000”, he said.

The renowned cyclist, Steven Nazombe challenged CFM saying he will do anything to beat the record despite the lack of proper training equipment and support.

“I welcome the idea and I will take the challenge to the heart”, he said.

Tengani concluded that in this year’s PIS edition they expect to have female contestants as compared to last event which had no female participant.
